Hi there and welcome to Southern Purl Fiber Co.! My name is Amanda and I am the owner of this little shop. Born and raised in Houston, I attended University of Houston and graduated with a degree in Chemical Engineering. While going to college, I met and fell for my husband David who I married in 2005. We moved to Pearland and have lived here since 2006, shortly before our son was born.
My mother and grandmother both passed the love of fiber on to me by teaching me to sew and cross stitch when I was little. Shortly after having my son, I taught myself to crochet and knit with a little embroidery thrown in for good measure. I typically spent my evenings after work doing some sort of handwork in order to help keep my hands busy or as a means of stress relief but never really putting any effort into developing my talent.
Over the years I gave it all up. I quit everything. I was depressed and going through some horrible times in my family. I lost my grandmother, then my stepfather, then my mother and then the pandemic hit. I picked my hobbies back up and actually had the time to level up my craft.
After lockdown, I found a job at one of the local yarn stores in the Houston area. That is when my dream of opening a store of my own began. Several years later and that journey has begun. I hope that you decide to stick around and see where we are going next. So keep reading our Blog and sign up for updates so you don't miss out on any of the news.
You can't run a business by yourself, you need a great team. My graphics designer is a mom and art teacher. The logical side of the house/business is my husband. The heavy lifting is usually my teenage son. My market research has been primarily done by the Interstellar Stitchers and other friends in the hobby. Another words, I wouldn't be where I am without the wonderful people who have supported me along the way. Thank you, it means the world to me.
